American Gurl is extremely catchy, and this was my basic introduction to this artist. More of a visionary, the album is meant to be inspired by the pushes and pulls in every direction American life. Not pretty enough, not enough power. Consumerist, always needing something more.
Pointless introduction to get us started, leading into American Gurl the lead single. I like the uniqueness of this song. It at least sounds unique to me.
"Death Fantasy" has Miguel in the backdrop and discusses not allowing the world to reshape her. I think the type of pop is a bit of an acquired taste, but I am listening.
"Distractions III: Spoiled Rotten" touches upon consumerist distractions that leave us working only to live paycheck to paycheck mindlessly. It definitely hits reality a little more than most may wanna hear.
"No Apology" sounds a bit more traditional pop, done very well. It almost seems to reference a breakup.
"Bloody Future" sounds more like the eclectic pop mixed with a touch of hip-hop. It is easy to get it stuck in your head.
"Choice Cowboy" might be the first song that feels like a miss to me. It doesn't seem to gel as well sonically or with the concept.
"Attention Politician" gets the album immediately back on track, making the song prior seem like a filler track easy to forget. It seems to reference our frustration as common people with higher ups just forgetting we're down here.
"New Tricks: Art, Aesthetics, and Money" seems to reference the frustration with being a product as an artist and how pop culture tends to be mindless indulgence. Nothing exactly false about.
"TV Baby V.2" is more like a short interlude but it sonically fits right in with the concept.
"On the Outside (Justin's Song)" seems a bit of a love song but within the concept, I could see it referring to the worship culture of pop culture figures we live in. Kind of a double meaning.
"Super KO Love" is lacking the emotion to keep me interested. Only second miss. Seems more like filler in the vein of Choice Cowboy.
"Intelligent Design" is a decent sign off, taking us back to confidence from the beginning that started the concept. It technically closes on some sort of video game sign off. That's probably a miss.
Lyrics: 7/10 - I think they often work within the concept, and while not being entirely complex, they are still well done.
Music: 9/10 - I am a fan of this sonically for some strong reason. I love the instrumentation. The melodies keep the flow nicely between every song despite many being different.
Overall: 8/10 - I recommend checking it out if you have not.
