Whether you remember her from Fifth Harmony, for her solo work, or her high profile relationship previously with Shawn Mendes, you have probably heard of her by now. Camilla has a tendency to be a bit hit or miss with me. While she can do amazing ballads like Consequences, or Feel It Twice...she also has Senorita, or Never Be the Same. Regardless, this album was supposed to move back toward her Cuban roots a bit with more latin music influences. Let's find out how that works out.
The album begins with a bit of a latin horn intro with "Familia", before shifting quickly to "Celia" which is actually sung in spanish. Her singing is not bad. It seems to come pretty naturally actually.
The sound takes a switch to "Psychofreak" featuring WILLOW, that has more pop influence. Some the lyricism will make this song easily dated in the future, but I actually like it.
"Bam Bam" was the lead single of the album, and I really dislike the difference between the vocal styling and how the music is. Ed Sheeran is on the track and it feels like he does not fit. Overall not enticing to me.
"La Buena Vida" is not too bad. I feel like some of the instrumental choices did not work with the song itself again. I think the album is coming off trying a little too hard.
"Quiet" is actually a trainwreck. She has no flow with the song. It sounds off. It sounds like she cannot fit the words into the beat. It is bad.
"Boys Don't Cry" uses instrumentation that really hurts the song as well. She does not have enough "soul" to make this work.
"Hasta Los Dientes" sounds better than most of the english songs. I still feel at times it is having flow problems. The album is kind of a miss from the music side.
"No Doubt" sounds like it is trying to follow spanish hip-hop music and she does not have the ability to do this well. Her choice of singing over the melody is a constant negative theme to this album.
"Don't Go Yet" was another single from the album, and honestly in hindsight it is one of the better album tracks.
"Lola" is the first touching track, which is actually historically about the struggles of Cuba's censored government from the perspective of a young girl who cannot experience the world due to them.
"Everyone at the Party" is such a strange closer. It would have fit better in the early part of the album, where she was still obviously talking about Shawn and their breakup. Going from Lola to this felt like whiplash.
Lyrics: 4/10 - The lyricism for the most part is not bad but isn't special enough to overtake the many issues with the album.
Music: 2/10 - It tries way too hard to get to the theme. When you commit to a sound you need to know what you're doing and how to melodically enhance it. If you cannot, then don't choose that sound.
Overall: 3/10 - This is by far her worst album. Surprised and disappointed. She is capable of better. I truly enjoyed "Romance" as an album. This is a mess and a huge step backwards for her.
